SMIAROWSKI
Established by Teddy and Eleanor Smiarowski, 1950
Teddy C. Smiarowski and his new bride Eleanor Shuzdak purchased the farm on upper Main St. in Hatfield in 1950. Teddy moved from his family’s farm in Montague. Teddy and Eleanor had 7 children, all of whom worked on the farm at some point. Teddy died early in 1989, at age 64. Afterwards, sons Ronnie and Bernie took over running the farm, with help from their brother John, while their youngest brother Jim was studying agricultural economics at UMass. At that time, they were growing asparagus, corn, strawberries, cucumbers, onions, squash and pumpkins on their 75 acres.
Today, the farm is run by four of the brothers: Ron, Bernie, John and Jim. All their children grew up working on the farm. The fifth brother, Teddy Jr., worked on the farm through college, went on to work for the USDA. His son Teddy C. III, was the first recipient of a scholarship from the Szawlowski Farms Agricultural Foundation in 2011, and he attended the UMass Stockbridge School of Agriculture. |
